lady in charge
My name is Vicky, I'm the founder and head attorney at Smolyar Law, and I help entrepreneurs use the law to their advantage, so that they can thrive and grow the businesses of their dreams.
Business is in my blood.
I started my first business in fifth grade, "publishing" and selling my own magazine to classmates, and the rest is, as they say, history.
My life-long pursuit of entrepreneurship eventually led me to law school, and when I was laid off from my job while I was on maternity leave, I poured my heart and soul into building my most favorite business venture to date - my law firm.
As both a business lawyer and a business owner, I'm highly in tune with the specific needs of my clients and I believe that:
All your legal decisions need to be made from a place of power, not fear.
As a business owner, you need to have some grasp of the law because the law is more than just a protection mechanism.
Understanding basic legal concepts and how the law can work to your advantage make you more confident and allow you to make more intentional and impactful business decisions.
My #1 priority when working with clients is to make sure that they understand not only what we’re doing, but why we’re doing it, and why it’s important, because knowledge is truly power!
You're 100%, most definitely not better off alone.
The appeal of doing everything yourself is definitely not lost on me. Maybe you’re just starting out and resources are tight, or maybe you’re just a Type-A entrepreneur who needs to have their hand in every aspect of their business.
But you can’t do #allthethings, and this is especially true for complex matters like trademark filings and contracts. There’s no “one size fits all” solution when it comes to your business’ legal needs. Every situation is unique and requires a specialized skill set and deep understanding of the relevant laws.
So, you can go down the DIY rabbit hole, or you can focus on doing what you do best – growing your business – and leave the legal to me (because it's what I do best).
Modern day businesses require modern day legal solutions.
The traditional law firm model does nothing for today's entrepreneurs - the unpredictable billing, long turn-around times, inability to get answers when you need them, the revolving door of attorneys handling your one matter - it just doesn’t work.
I personally run my firm and do so with the help of legal and business technology. This provides for a seamless client experience and ensures that every client's legal needs are met, quickly, efficiently, and affordably.
It's possible to have your cake, and eat it, too!
It's possible to have a lawyer that will:
Never let you get away with not knowing what you need to know to build a crazy-successful business.
Competently help you tackle your legal to-do list in the fastest and most productive manner possible.
Provide big law services, without the big law price tag.
Support and nurture you throughout your entrepreneurial journey.
on a personal note...
I'm a wife, and a mama to two beautiful babies and one fur baby. My family is my everything.
We live in NYC, which has been my home since I was 5 years old - my family immigrated to the US from the former USSR (now, Russia).
I love all animals and am incredibly passionate about rescuing. I sit on the Board of Rescue City, and, shameless plug: if you're in NY (or the surrounding tri-state area) and are in the market for a new doggy, check them out!
Food is my love language. I love growing it, cooking it, baking it, and of course, eating it (except raisins, because, ew!)
I'm obsessed with traveling, and if given the chance, I'd hop on a plane or boat any day of the week.
I truly truly love what I do, but if I wasn't a lawyer, I'd probably be an interior designer, or a wedding planner.
Other notable mentions:
I think puns are punbelievably funny.
I'm terrified of clowns.
Disney gets a good chunk of my annual salary.
I follow every cute animal on IG.
I love a good meme (the parenting ones make me feel seen).
The 90's was the best decade - change my mind.
